Forever Chemicals and Your Wristband: What Every WHOOP Wearer Should Know

What Are Forever Chemicals?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — known as PFAS — are a class of synthetic chemicals used in manufacturing since the 1940s. They are valued for their resistance to heat, water, and oil. You will find them in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, firefighting foam, and — increasingly concerning — in the accessories people wear directly against their skin every day.

The name "forever chemicals" is not an exaggeration. PFAS do not break down naturally in the environment or in the human body. They accumulate. Over time, that accumulation becomes the problem.

Where They End Up

PFAS contamination has been detected in drinking water, agricultural soil, wildlife, and human blood across every continent. They move through ecosystems, concentrate in food chains, and persist at levels that compound with each new exposure. Communities near industrial sites face the most acute risk, but the issue is systemic, not localised.

The Health Picture

The research connecting PFAS exposure to human health outcomes continues to grow. Studies have linked prolonged exposure to:

  • Hormonal and endocrine disruption
  • Immune system impairment
  • Elevated cancer risk (particularly kidney and testicular cancers)
  • Developmental issues in children
  • Liver damage

Regulatory bodies in the EU, US, and UAE are responding — setting stricter limits, restricting specific compounds, and scrutinising consumer products more closely. But regulation lags behind the science, and consumer awareness lags behind both.

Why This Matters for Wearables

The fitness and wellness technology industry has a PFAS problem that is rarely discussed. Smartwatch and fitness tracker bands are commonly manufactured using synthetic materials treated with PFAS to achieve water resistance, durability, and flexibility. These bands are worn continuously — 24 hours a day, through workouts, sleep, and everything in between.

Research has now detected PFAS in several widely available fitness tracker bands, including products from major consumer brands. The skin is a direct absorption pathway. Daily contact with PFAS-treated materials is not a theoretical concern — it is ongoing exposure.

What You Can Do

Awareness drives better decisions. When evaluating any wearable accessory, ask: what is this made from? Is it PFAS-free? Has it been independently certified for skin safety?

At Rocker Duck, we built our answer into the product. The Ecoband is crafted from premium vegan leather — PFAS-free, OEKO-TEX® certified, and designed for the person who tracks their health because they actually care about it.

What touches your skin all day should meet the same standard as what you put in your body.
