Most wristbands — including many sold for performance wearables — are made from synthetic materials that contain PFAS: a class of man-made chemicals known as "forever chemicals." They don't break down in the environment. They accumulate in the body. And they stay in contact with your skin every single day.

At Rocker Duck, we made a deliberate choice to use something better.

What Are Forever Chemicals (PFAS)?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of synthetic chemicals that have been used in manufacturing since the 1940s. They are valued for their resistance to water, oil, and heat — which is why they end up in non-stick coatings, waterproof fabrics, and yes, wearable bands.

The problem: PFAS do not break down naturally. They persist in soil, water, and the human body for decades — which is how they earned the name "forever chemicals." Exposure has been linked to hormonal disruption, immune system impairment, liver damage, developmental issues in children, and increased cancer risk.

Regulatory bodies across the EU, US, and UAE are increasingly restricting PFAS in consumer products. But most wearable bands on the market have not caught up.

PFAS in Smartwatch Bands: The Evidence

Recent independent studies have detected PFAS in several widely available smartwatch and fitness tracker bands, including products from major brands. The levels found may appear low in isolation — but the cumulative effect of 24/7 skin contact over months and years is the relevant measure.

If you are wearing a health tracker to optimise your wellbeing, the material touching your skin should not undermine that goal.
